a cigarette and a nice view

the moments of unity
lie at the interstices of chance
suspended in infinity
where the terrible and the beautiful converge
where the angels and the demons
clash and converse
in a multitude of cantankerous tongues

the sight of the fog
rising across the land
from the distance
and the wistful melodies
emerge
in the voice of a thousand choirs
singing in one voice
one breath

until

the weight of gravity
draws you back
to the ephemeral and incomplete reality
that lashes on these shores
in whispering, monotonous waves
in waters too shallow for us to drown in
and too deep for us to wade
