we stood there on the surface of the world
below us, shouldering the millennia
skeletal catacombs
kept the earth round on calcified hollows
supported by the bones of our ancestors
a honeycomb of oblivion
upon which rested oceans, and rivers and cities
men and children
the lives of those above
the void
lives lived
beneath thunderclouds and rain
lives that have no fears
yet
and have no regrets
still
and seek their way
with dignity
with love
as if none knew
what awaited below
here in the silent maze
of forgotten pasts to come
the remains of a castle stood
nearby
i looked your way
and i saw your face
looking out toward the sea
i felt the sorrow
of knowing
we were too late for something
but I never found out what
and you never asked anyway
as we walked back to the road
back to the land of the living
